Dr. Tara Singh Kamal is a distinguished academician, scientist, and veteran researcher in the field of Electronics and Communication Engineering, renowned for his exemplary contributions spanning over five decades. A Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India), Fellow of IETE, Senior Life Member IEEE (USA), Life Member ISTE and the Indian Science Congress Association, he is globally recognized for his leadership and pioneering work in digital communications, optical communication, neural networks, and signal processing.
Dr. Kamal earned his Ph.D. in 1983 from Punjab University, Chandigarh, following his M.E. (Gold Medalist) and B.E. in Electronics & Communication Engineering from the University of Roorkee (now IIT Roorkee). He has guided 27 Ph.D. scholars to completion across cutting-edge research domains including optical and wireless communication, neural networks, antenna design, and free-space optical systems, with several more working under his mentorship.
He has held several prestigious academic and administrative positions including Professor & Head, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh; Professor & Head at SLIET Longowal; Principal, Guru Teg Bahadur Khalsa Institute of Engineering & Technology; Dean (Research & Technology Transfer); and Officer on Special Duty at SLIET. He has also served as Vice President, Institution of Engineers (India) (2001–02) and Chairman, Punjab & Chandigarh State Centre (1999–2001).
With an enriching legacy of academic service, Dr. Kamal has authored and presented over 200 research papers, delivered keynote and presidential addresses at premier national and international conferences, and contributed to technological advancements in optical fiber communication, digital transmission systems, neural computing, OFDM systems, and antenna engineering. His leadership in engineering education, R&D planning, and industry–institution interaction has significantly shaped technical education and research culture in India.
Dr. Kamal has been honoured with several national awards, including the Sir Thomas Ward Memorial Medal and the National Award for Lifetime Contribution to Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering. He served as President, Engineering Sciences Section of the Indian Science Congress (2004–05), demonstrating his stature in the national scientific community.
