Short Biography
Dr. Reeta Grewal is a Professor of History at Panjab University, Chandigarh, with over 34 years of teaching and research experience. She earned her M.A., M.Phil, and Ph.D. from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, each with distinction, and was awarded gold medals at both postgraduate and M.Phil levels.
Dr. Grewal specializes in urbanization and the social and cultural history of Medieval and Modern India, with a particular focus on the North-Western region. Her teaching expertise spans the history of Punjab (15th–20th centuries), Modern India, World History, and research methodology.
She has authored and edited several significant books, including Five Thousand Years of Urbanization: The Punjab Region and Colonialism and Urbanization in India: The Punjab Region, along with numerous research articles in reputed journals and edited volumes.
Dr. Grewal has held key academic and administrative positions, including Chairperson of the Department of History and Convenor of the Boards of Studies at Panjab University. She has supervised numerous Ph.D. and M.Phil scholars and played a foundational role in establishing the PU-ISSER integrated social sciences programme.
An active member of professional bodies such as the Indian History Congress and the Urban History Association of India, she has also participated in academic programs and research visits abroad, including the UK and the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her ongoing research focuses on hill stations, cantonments, and sacred spaces in Punjab.
