Short Biography

  • Prof. Gurmukh Singh is professor at Department of Punjabi, Punjabi University, Patiala. He is also the Director, Centre for Diaspora Studies, Punjabi University. His areas of research specialisation are Punjabi fiction, Punjabi Cinema, Popular Culture, Diasporic Punjabi Literature and Literary Theory. One of the major aspects of his research work has been the attempt to understand the complex relationship between Cinema and the Novel. In the recent history of Punjab, the partition of 1947 and the Punjab crisis of 80s (1982- 1992) are the two events without which it is difficult to comprehend the problems pertaining to Punjab and Punjabi identity. Dr Gurmukh Singh’s research work engages with the representation of Partition of Punjab and Punjab crisis in fiction and Cinema. In the process, the aim of his studies has been to examine and foreground the politics of representation. In the history of Punjabi scholarship, he is one of the first scholars to critically study Punjabi Cinema and Popular Culture in a systemic and consistent manner. In addition to publishing more than 30 scholarly papers, he has also published a book titled “Visual Culture and Punjabi Identity” in the area of visual cultural studies. Dr Gurmukh has published 07 books and 72 research papers in different national and international journals, conference proceedings and books. He has presented more than 60 papers in conferences and seminars.
