The Certificate in Punjab Archiving and Museology is designed to provide learners with a structured, practical, and professionally oriented introduction to the principles and practices of archiving and museology, with special and sustained reference to Punjab's extraordinarily rich and layered cultural heritage. Punjab occupies a unique position in the heritage landscape of the Indian subcontinent: it is home to Harappan archaeological sites among the oldest in South Asia, to the living traditions of Sikh manuscript culture and the sacred institution of the Guru Granth Sahib, to the devastating and deeply human testimonies of the 1947 Partition, to folk art traditions phulkari, bagh, giddha kept alive largely by women and to colonial revenue records that document two centuries of agrarian history. This heritage is vast, diverse, and in many areas urgently at risk.
The programme responds to this situation by training a new generation of heritage practitioners who possess both the theoretical foundations and the practical skills to work with Punjab's archival and museum collections. It is designed for delivery through Open and Distance Learning (ODL), making it accessible to learners across Punjab regardless of location, existing employment, or life circumstances. It places particular emphasis on the employability of its graduates equipping them for work in archives, museums, heritage institutions, digital heritage platforms, cultural tourism, and community documentation projects. A distinctive feature of the programme is its sustained attention to gender equity: acknowledging that women in Punjab have historically been the primary custodians of living heritage traditions while being systematically excluded from formal heritage sector employment, the programme actively creates professional pathways for women learners.
